TaxAct is once again offering their free online tax preparation service. You can prepare and print your tax forms free, or E-file for free as well. They are a government authorized e-file provider.

There are extra fees you'll have to pay if you want to get the state software, E-filing of both Federal and State, or if you want to get the download version. If you've used the web version in the past there is also a fee to access previous years tax information if you need to go back to it for any reason. When all is said and done you usually end up paying just about as much as you would if you bought one of the tax softwares offered in stores (once you've dealt with rebates and whatnot).

Whatever you do this tax season, don't go to H&R Block. Their so-called tax professionals take a 2 week course to train them and then they are unleashed upon unsuspecting customers. They don't know anything about tax law and really are just following the steps outlined by H&R Block's software. There is no reason to go there. Because H&R Block is perpetrating this fraud on people, I suggest avoiding H&R Block's software as well. burp those thumbplum.

    sincerely,

Or you can live in a state that you don't have to file state taxes, you don't need to access last year's tax information, and you don't want to get the download version. When all is said and done, you will end up paying nothing for this tax return with E-file.

"Ultimate" download version with federal and state and one free e-file (and as many paper returns as you like) is $20 (#1, is that too much for you or you enjoy messing around with rebates?). Also imports previous year's TaxACT info which saves a lot of typing. Good value for the money. Oh, and there is no stupid DRM to worry about (is Intuit still doing that crap?).

I've only use this for about five years in a row, so WTHDIK? Smile

#1 The download version is free. It is nagware. They ask several times if you want to upgrade, but it is free.

#6 Thanks for the alternative. There are many places to use to e-file free that can be accessed through the IRS website here: http://www.irs.gov/efile/article/0,,id=118986,00.html ,but all of them have an adjusted gross income limit of $54,000.

I have been using TaxAct for over three years, awesome software and great prices. Federal plus two states (two efiles, 1 I am mailing) came out to less than $40 total (I think it was low 30's). Import feature is great, I finished my taxes with two states in about two to three hours last weekend. My federal and state have already been accepted.

I used turbotax in the past, and this for the first time this year. About the same. It cost me 13 bucks to file my state, but fed was free. Turbotax was about 40 for everything. It did a pretty good job. It'll ask you twenty times to upgrade for 10 bucks, but there's no need. All the info you need is at irs.gov and linked from the taxact site.

why would you wanna go through http://www.icanefile.org/ to do eFile, just go to the government site to do it. I wouldn't want to go through another 3rd party to do eFile and let them get a hold of my personal information
