Newegg has the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 600 x 600 dpi Duplex Scanner for $430 - $30 off with coupon code SCAN32B [Exp 4/7] = $400 with free shipping. Features scanning speed of 20 pages a minute in color, an automatic document feeder, and includes OCR software. Check out this Cnet review.
We have two of them. One at work and one at home. In combination with them and SugarSync they have changed the way we work. The SugarSync iPad app makes everything we have scanned on the S1500 available almost anywhere.
Question for those who have this - does it play well with 4x6 photos?
My dad has about 20,000 photos that we need to digitize, and a flatbed is too tedious.. we haven't made a dent. I'm looking for a decent auto-feed to start working through them.
I bought this two weeks ago from B&H for $430... should have waited because I just began using it yesterday.
For Photos, I recommend you use the carrier sheet because the roller mechanism would make permanent marks on the photo where it picks up. If you don't care about the roller marks, then it is very fast. Of course you have to load each picture into the carrier sheet and then scan. I've scanned a few hundred pictures without the carrier sheet until I realized later that all of them have roller marks. Now I just use a flatbed scanner for photographs. After several hundred scans, there are lines showing up in the scans, meaning you have to clean the scanner often to remove them.
Excellent device for scanning documents including statements, business cards, checks, etc. Wouldn't trust it with photos. Odd small shapes can tend to jam.
Comes with proprietary organizational software - be sure to grab the online update. Also comes with Acrobat 9 Standard - again, run updates. Proprietary software a little klunky but works OK. OCR takes some horsepower to complete.
Tried getting 5 of these awesome scanners--the fricken coupon code only works for the first unit, so I'm in for one only.
I have four of these scanners, and they work great. Scans fast and has a small footprint so it fits well into limited deskspace. If you want to go "paperless," this scanner is the perfect machine--can scan through hundreds of pages in a short amount of time. The included Acrobat 9 also is a big plus (even though it is now "outdated").

Awesome underrated product.

Other than that, I love this scanner! Very clear scans of text and receipts.
I wouldn't suggest this for photos. If you have thousands of documents you want go paperless this is an excellent option.
