I used to have 8GB and the memory had to be swapped when Photoshop and Illustrator were loaded with images. Starting a virtual machine would take about 3GB of RAM too. I upgraded to 16GB (same G.Skill, very happy, paid three times the current prices) and I never went over the 16GB. For my purpose 16GB is completely enough for now.
You can find a free RAMDISK utility that can make a 4GB drive out of excess RAM. That would be a sweet Photoshop scratch disk, much faster than any SSD around.
How much memory do you really need? I have 6GB on my PC and it doesn't come close to getting filled I'm curious about the experience of others.
