I can't afford this, but I wish I could. These are absolutely amazing tools. I don't know about this brand, but the GPS is way better than just straight mileage. You can get a graph of your vertical change as well as horizontal and set alerts, like if you wanted to keep your pace at x minutes per mile. Awesome tools.
If you already have a GPS-enabled smartphone, think twice before bothering with this gadget, you could always just get an armband and run with your phone. There are plenty of free smartphone exercise apps out there.
#5, yes, with this device you need a strap. Heart rate WITH GPS recording is the benefit of this device (if it has the optional $30 strap.) Heart rate training is a great way to set goals, monitor under training, monitor over training, track improvements, and set race strategy.

Garmin produces good gps units. For work out things I don't know why they need it.
