How does the GPS work on this, does it come with map software preinstalled, is the resolution within 50 feet, does it track your journey? I'd think with GPS in the name there would be some details on what seems to be its selling feature.

#3 GPS is not used only for driving it is a technology with which 3 D co-ordinates of the place can be determined where the that "GPS receiver" is located. So these kind of devices use simple kinematics to calculate different things like, distance, speed, velocity etc.

    the specs say:
    Waypoints/favorites/locations: 0 (sports watch is not GPS-enabled)
SO does this (really inexpensive watch) really have GPS?

The Garmin web site has a demo of the capabilities of this watch:
    http://www8.garmin.com/buzz/fr50/
It does NOT have a GPS, it uses an optional foot pod to determine distance and pace. It requires a USB reciever (not sure if it's an accessory or included) in order to upload data to your PC. Seems like all you get is a nice heart rate monitor/recorder with this watch.
