BuyDig.com is offering Garmin nuMaps Lifetime North America Map Updates for $75 with free shipping. This lifetime map update service lets you download the newest map data up to four times a year and does not require any monthly fee.
#4, the lifetime map models by Garmin costs way more than getting a subscription for an existing model. It is cheaper than getting a comparable model and then adding the subscription though.
Smartphone with GPS does not function as well as a Nuvi - yet. I've used a few, they suck. Small screen, crappy text to speech (or none at all), no maps loaded in the unit means you have to depend on sometimes flaky data connection to download maps. No doubt they'll improve (except for the screen) but I'll stick to my Nuvi for now.
#5 needs to spend more time shopping and less time talking. If one bothers to watch the LM versions are as little as $25 to $50 more than the non-LM versions.
#4, Chances are NOT that most new Garmins are LM. There are LM versions of most models but thats not the same thing.
#1, yes, you lose, misplace, or upgrade your GPS and this lifetime map does not transfer or even qualify one for a discount.
what if your GPS gets stolen and you have to buy a new one ? Your $75 will be gone ?
Meh, I'll just replace my $95 GPS...
Agree, #2.
Sell your current Garmin & buy a new one. Chances are it will be a LM (Lifetime Maps) model anyways.
Or if you have a smartphone with GPS a Garmin is pointless anyways.

Smart phones are the way to go. One device replaces MP3 player, digital camera, and GPS receiver.
Smart phone is not as good as Nuvi in this department.
