I got Mio for $55 few months back and it is a very good unit. Tom Tom (used that before) had better re-routing AI but Mio has better maps. I think if you go with brand like Tom Tom or Garmin you should be OK.

Well, I'm also worried about people stealing it too. THey keep telling us to take it out every night if we have one of these. I think it's more of a hassle if that is a hot item for thieves. My car is not worth breaking into but if it has a GPS then it might. LOL

I got a nuvi 800 series. I left it turned off but plugged into the cig lighter in the car, and then didn't drive for a week. Freaking thing somehow killed my car battery. Must be something wrong w/ it.

Garmin is a great unit from the rentals i've had them in. Wife loves Tom Tom. Both brands are good.

#6, it says turn-by-turn now...isn't that the same as you're talking about?

I have owned a Garmin for two years. It is particularly helpful when in downtown areas.

I just ordered a garmin nuvi 255WT(wide and traffic) for 229.99 from bestbuy.com today. too bad they have stores in so many states so you may end up paying sales tax.

#1, I own a tom tom and am going back to garmin if that gives you a clue on which I prefer.
I owned a mio c310x that had a speed warning feature that seems to have been discontinued. too bad it was great. at least the nuvi xx5 series have a speed limit display that is supposed to be good.
#4, research the cost of a replacement window on your car before deciding that it is too much trouble to remove your GPS when it is parked. my mio was stolen a few years ago. having to pay for the window too is no fun.

TomTom XL 340-S is $97 @ Target today. They were storing them at the pharmacy counter in our local Target. No lines. In and out in a few minutes!

Yup, the TomTom 140 or XL340 would do better than the nuvi in pricing but u'll get what u pay for

There were few at Best Buy's sale this morning, but none were that big of deal to draw me in.

what exactly requires monthly/annual/lifetime subscription, traffic alerts, weather, POI, etc., or just street names and fast connection? what's sponsored by adds and why?

#12, tom tom xl 340 is $97 at newegg as well as target. this might be good if you can not get to a target or do not like paying sales tax (it has free shipping)

that said I still prefer the nuvi over tomtom but if someone wants a tomtom, here is the info.

      update:
I just read a review that the S model tells the street names, to the plain version at newegg is not as good

I bought this unit for my dad last BF for $100 shipped. Its a great GPS with basic functionality. I also have the 255W which is widescreen and says the street names.
