I like mine muted.. So any voice prompts are worthless.

Same here, #2. My wife gets annoyed with the voice prompts too as she considers it her job to tell me how to drive.

So then, this sounds like a decent deal? Basic GPS that seems to go for $100-$120 typically. Are there better alternatives for $90-$100? I want to get one for me mum who won't use or appreciate additional bells and whistles.

Well.... doesn't seem to matter anyway since it comes up at $199.
