got it for about the same price a couple of months ago from dell. works pretty good...sometimes it seems slow to pick up a satellite but overall its a pretty good deal. nice wide screen.

I got it refurb from Amazon, 12-m guaranty, 60-day map update, $130 shipped. It's good. I like it.

Is it worth the $40 jump to this (255W) from the Garmin 255 (refurb, 3.5" screen) being sold on Newegg?

Think this way: for some 20-ish (40 + 20) you can even get a Tomtom. I actually got a Tomtom One 130S for $70 before rebate (coming). I used my friend's Tomtom One 130 (no "S") ($50 AR)and it's good enough to take me where I wanted to go.
So if you go low-end, get the cheapest (that works, of course).

garmin will tell you if your destination is on the left/right side of the street. in anyway, this is a cheap deal.

#3, if you can swing the extra price go with a W version. the 4.3" wide screen makes using and seeing the map much easier than the 3.5" versions.

I just got my in-laws the 265WT and they love it. Only difference I can see between that and this one is the 265WT comes with life-time updates and life-time traffic (dunno how useful the traffic updates are as we haven't seen any yet).

#6, I don't think the 265W comes with lifetime update.

You're wrong. The 265WT does come with lifetime updates.
