Newegg has the refurbished Garmin Nuvi 750 4.3" Screen GPS with Text-to-Speech & 5+ Million POIs with NavGear Dash Mount for $150 + $0 shipping = $150 shipped. It has an FM transmitter that plays voice prompts, MP3s or audio books and does it all through your car's stereo system. [Compare]

I'd hold off on purchasing any GPS device until after Thanksgiving.

Even with the latest firmware I had problems with the spoken directions breaking up.

After using my wife's Nuvi 360 and comparing it to my PDA based Tom Tom, I prefer the Tom Tom more. The user interface on the Tom Tom is much better. I hate using the Garmin as a result.

Anyone had expderience with the stand-alone Tom Tom's? How are they compared to the Nuvi.

I had an old Navman that routed far better than my Nuvi 350. If I went intentionally "off course" with the Navman, it generally knew what I was trying to do and rerouted me in a way that made sense. The stupid Garmin keeps trying to turn you back around to go the way it wants, and when it does eventually reroute, it's such a convoluted way that you wish you'd stayed on course in the first place... Plus, I find the cartoonish map graphics of the Nuvi lacking compared to a lot of other units out there. I really don't know why people like them so much.

I'm not sure if TomTom fixed this, but, the reason I prefer Garmin is because the Point-of-interest list is DYNAMIC on the Garmin, STATIC on the Tom Tom. That means, if you're driving and looking for your nearby International House of Bacon, the Garmin's list constantly refreshes, but the TomTom only shows the static list at the time you request it.

I've had both TomTom and Nuvi's and overall I prefer the Nuvi's for sure. The TomTom just seemed slightly less user friendly and its spoken directions were not nearly as clear and comprehendable as the Garmin's. The Garmins also seem to tell me exactly what turn to take at exactly the logical time you need it...many times I've found myself asking in my head "I wonder if I take a right up here or the next one" and as soon as I think the thought the Garmin just happens to say "take a right up ahead".

Having said that, why get this refurb when for another $50 you can get the more capable 780 from Amazon brand new.

Because another $50 is a 33% higher price!
