Reviews complain that the LCD has a lower max resolution of 1440x900 for a 17" but other than that it gets good reviews.

Refurb from TDirect might be something to avoid though, I don't deal with them anymore personally so no idea if they've gotten reliable or not.

Last time TigerDirect put a Gateway P-78xx laptop on sale for $750, it was the P-7811FX model. That model(which I bought) has a 1900x1200 resolution screen.

This laptop supports upgrading the RAM to 8gb, and you can upgrade the CPU to a faster dualcore or a quadcore. Additionally, it has two hard drive bays(RAID is supported), so you can throw in a 500gb HD for more storage capacity, if you'd like.

The P-7811FX that I bought has been great. Gaming performance is excellent, battery life is pretty good for a desktop replacement, and the two hard drive bays have allowed me to install a couple other operating systems, and run this like a desktop(not always worrying about storage space).

As for being a refurb, the one I bought was also a refurb. The first one I got had a couple small problems, so I sent it back and got a replacement that didn't have any problems. TigerDirect made the return very smooth. Since then, the laptop has been trouble-free.

The screen is WXGA not WUXGA which is a huge downgrade from P7811 which I own refurb from compusa.

This looks so-so, I really want a decent laptop for playing L4D and SC2. Also for CS4 and flash server app development. Anyone know of laptop OEMs with screen resolutions at 1680x1050?

#4: take a look at the Gateway P-7811FX. It has the same features as this laptop, except it has a 1920x1200 screen res. I've been using one for a while now, TigerDirect had them on sale for $750 a couple months ago.

They tend to go on sale at BestBuy pretty regularly at $1250.

I have a 7805u from Best Buy during the initial batch that had a 1920x1200 screen and loving it.

However I have not seen it on sale in the past few months. Although regular price for the 7805u is $1150. The 7811 is no longer available in retail nor is the upgraded 7801u. The 7808u which is a 2 GHz quad-core variant with 500 GB 5400 RPM drive and WXGA screen is $1750.
