Caps are Solid State, but the HS doesn't cover them or the memory chips like the XFX, PNY, EVGA etc. versions and simply relies on case airflow along with the air pushed off the installed copper cooler. Although the "Zalman like" chip cooler may be more effective than the others?, I would prefer all components cooled by the HS. Is this not logical? Or very arguable?
Memory is rated to far higher temperatures than GPUs, and the airflow from the HSF should be enough to keep them cool. (Unless you're into OC'ing) Capacitors don't heat up significantly, so they don't need cooling.
This is one of the fastest 8800GTs you can get. Comes with Neverwinter Nights 2 CD.
Oh, and the cooler is not "Zalman like". It's a Zalman! And does a fine job of sending air over the rest of the card.
#3, Yeah I just seen that, in the tiny letters under the big "Gigabyte"
I can somewhat deal with the cooling by throwing airflow over it, but it just looks so dam cheesy! You can't deny that, can you? It looks like an 8600 with an aftermarket HS on it.
I honestly don't think this would run cooler than my 8800 PNY as the HS is half the size? How would this perform OC'd, or better yet it most likely is clocked to it's limit? anyone own one of these that can comment on the cooling and/or OC'ing?
#5 - I'd say you can probably safely go up to 725 MHz though I'd make sure you got sufficient case cooling too. Even EVGA's Superclocked 8800GT only clocks at 650 MHz so even with the Zalman and solid capacitors, I wouldn't push these cards too much considering the skimpy warranty that comes with it.
#4 - Lol. Hey, at least it does a good job with the cooling--with less noise too.
yes the zalman coolers work very well and are super quiet although memory cooling is a bit of a problem
I have mine oc'ed to 730/1850/1024(core/shader/mem). idle temps are about 36c, under full load around 47c. Running it 24/7 for about 6 months now with no problems.
This seems compelling since there are only TWO other 8800GT's at the Egg that are at or above 700MHz out of the box, and they cost ~$200.
When I bought this back in Jan andit was $250, that's after a $30 discount on Newegg.com. So far it's been running great though.
