Newegg tries to sell this card for long time, recently it was $15 AR with free shipping. However, $20 is not bad price too. Cons - weak card for gaming.
#1: correct, this is definitely not a gaming card. This is a HTPC card. It is low profile, has a HDMI output, and it has a built-in surround sound chip, so it can output sound over the HDMI connector.
does the hdmi port pass sound too?
#3: yes, that's the whole point. AMD has been integrating surround sound in their video cards so you can connect just one cable from your graphics card to your TV, and watch a movie.
Other companies require special adapters and cables running from your other sound card to your video card.
#4, do you work for AMD or do you just cuddle up with your AMD comforter, pillows and pajamas at night?
#5: well, I've always found it fun to stick "Intel Inside" stickers on garbage cans. Does that count?
I recommend AMD cards because they offer better features for a lower price. Is there a problem with that?
Back when nVidia offered better performance for a lower price, I recommended their products.
#6: The irony of it is that this is geared to be an HTPC card, but (in my experience) Linux is a better HTPC platform than Windows... and ATI's Linux drivers are garbage for fullscreen video.
@compwiz Best explanation as to how to get both surround sound and video out over a PC HDMI that I've seen. Cheap too.
How is linux a better HTPC platform if it doesn't work well with common HTPC video cards?
Anyway, yes, if you're running linux, you're probably better off getting an nVidia card. ATI has been making progress lately in increasing their Linux support, but I'd imagine it's still not as good as nVidia.
While linux may be better, most HTPC computers do run on on Windows.
