iTunes Store has the GPS by TeleNav iOS Software for $0. Features 3D maps, live traffic flow, turn by turn directions with manual rerouting, local search, cheap gas finder, facebook integration, and more.
Android has 4 free GPS apps but the free google maps nav is good enough. I'll take that over gimmicky voice recognition, that's fun to demo but mostly useless, any day.
I agree with techsupport. I miss my android just for Google Navigation. I used the Mapquest app for iPhone this week and took a 1 hour detour. The iPhone almost went flying out the window.
I would suggest to check out Waze in the app store (also on Android). It is a very cool GPS app that allows the user to report accidents, police speed traps, construction areas, etc. I use it all the time with no issues.
can this be used in airplane mode with wifi and 3g off?
Iphone blows when it comes to GPS. This app doesn't even give you turn-by-turn navigation unless you pay rent. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gps-by-telenav/id414817704?mt=8

Amaze GPS is free too, not sure what platforms it covers though.
I thought this app was already installed when you bought the phone
Turn by turn navigation works fine on my iphone 3GS.
