    Good cans for rock, though a bit uncomfortable for long listening sessions and require an amp with ample current for best results (not ideal for a portable media player or direct connection to middle or lower end computer sound outputs).

    Just my $.02 if you can afford it: the Sony MDR-7506 are worth a serious look. They go for $95 (free shipping) at Adorama Camera. While I'm not a huge Sony audio fan, they did get these right on sound quality. Plenty of good reviews online as well.

    Stereophile r'cmd comp. years and years ago.. They work fine w/ my $10 AA powered mp3 player and my iphone, I dont feel any amplification is needed. uncomforable, yes, that can be true. nice long cord for work PC that are down on the floor, etc..

    I love my 80s. The headband on the 80s can be bent to apply less pressure on your earholes, may work on these. The foam on the pads may be these bigger problem.

    I also disagree with #2. The SR line is fairly efficient and has a low enough impedance that any portable can drive them fine. It'll sound better with an amp but it's much more efficient then then say the comparable Sennheisers.

    That's backwards. With higher impedance you merely limit the max volume, but with low impedance you get distortion when the amp chip current limits itself. This is a well known issue in audiophile circles, check out the headamp designs meant for low impedance cans at places like http://www.headfi.org.

    Also, Impedance != efficiency

    The ideal match for a portable player is pairing the amp chip in it with headphones having median impedance, so neither the voltage swing nor the current becomes excessive. If you only listen at low volume levels it may not matter so much, but since these Grados are best suited for rock, it stands to reason some listeners will want higher than average volume.
