...maybe. if you only listen to them in perfectly quiet environments with nobody else around to bother with the sound coming out of your head.

This is a really excellent headphone for the price.... but definitely not portable.
Get a pair of PX100 if you wants portable. I have both and they proved good quality headphones are not always expensive.

These are definately NOT meant for "a portable."

The "SR" stands for studio reference...which means that there are better things for listening to music recreationally. When you need to hear every detail uncolored, for instance in a studio setting, then these would be a good choice for inexpensive cans.

Like...you'd never buy $3,000 studio reference monitors for your home theater. They'd sound like ass...but in their element, they are worth every bacon double bacon burger.

Why doesn't someone just say it simply? There is *nothing* on the market as good as these for the price. Period. These set the standard for aural quality at their price point.

I dunno about not using audiophile quality headphones on the home theater as I use my Sennheiser HD600s with mine all the time. They don't cost 3 grand but they do cost a few times more than most folks around here will pay. In any case, the amp has the power needed to drive the cans without a pre-amp, but I still have an e-mu pre-amp for some reason.

I'll agree with #3. The PX100s at $35-$37 are the best choice for a portable (if you don't mind sounds leaking in and out). Above the sound of the PX100s, is the fact that they fold into a case and are built to take a bit of abuse. While the wires cannot be owner replaced, the ear pads can be swapped out after they get all skanked from gym sweat.

#7, he wasn't talking about $3000 headphones. He was talking about "studio monitors". They're specialized SPEAKERS for studios, which would not sound too good in a home theater setting.

    Oh I see.

I think there are some $3000 headphones that are actually identified as studio reference monitors. I mean, there are such things as DJ headphones used in radio studios.

Perhaps if he had simply made a transitional phrase changing the subject from headphones to speakers the meaning would have been clear.

Studio monitor class headphones generally have sturdier cup pads and aren't as painful to wear long term as these are.

SR60 are very good sound quality for the price, best for listening to rock on a neutral sounding amp. Not bad for recoloring the treble mutations on lesser quality MP3 either but as other mentioned, certainly too large for (typical) portable use and their low impedance is a bit hard for some portable players to drive without distortion at higher volume.

Frankly for all purpose cans (besides just rock), better soundstage and a lot more comfort, I suggest Sennheiser HD555 instead but of course they do cost a little more, about $94 delivered,

No kidding about Sennheiser comfort. They're about as uncomfortable as a comfy knit cap that's had time to adjust exactly to your head.

IMHO, "studio monitor" phones (at least for studio work) are typically closed back (for isolation) - and if not sturdier, have replaceable parts. As I remember, all the HD5xx have the wire attached to the phones with a jack (right at the phones) - very nice for when you forget you have 'em on and try to walk away. Maybe the Grados have this, too(?)

#9 - "DJ" typically just mean that the cups can be swiveled around so you can just put one cup against one ear to hear whatever you're cueing up. Neither these nor the 555s do that.
