Yip, no worrying about decaying paper. Scanned all my photos years ago into .PCX files on 5.25" floppies so I'm safe.

Ok. What am I missing? Can't a basic canon or epson scanner do that and more?

#1, you make a valid point about slowly decaying paper perhaps being the longest-lasting archival choice. Changing file formats and especially physical media changes over the years (anyone remember zip drives and LS-120 SuperDisks?) can be a pain to keep up with.

    Question for all:
For storage in a fire-resistant safe, which media choice would be safest--optical media (bit-rot concerns?) or flash media? Keep in mind that the safe releases moisture internally to protect the contents during a fire event...

What everyone here seems to be forgetting is the manufacturer of this device: Hammacher Schlemmer! Any brand that sells exclusively in airplane magazines has GOT to be top notch!

#11, not quite "exclusively" as Hammacher Schlemmer has a B&M store in New York. Is a pretty cool place.

Flash Media is the most resistant to heat and liquid, but it will also bit-rot after sitting for close to a decade, but should remain more reliable than anything else until then unless you do something risky like plug it into a windows box's USB port since windows likes to corrupt flash drives if they fall offline in the middle of cached writing.

I tried that, but Dwayne Johnson kept bleeding all over my data.

That attempt at humor did not succeed.
