I bought one of these this past weekend. It hasn't come in yet. From everything I've read this does an amazing job of capturing an HD signal. I plan on using it on a HTPC.
It only records at 1080i if source is 1080i It will not upgrade the source. It doesn't have a HDMI connection. I guess it uses the hard drive on your system because and can not find any specs for its own internal storage.
why get this when you can put an ATI digital tuner + CableCARD in your HTPC? You don't have to deal with the hassle of renting/paying for TiVo or HD-DVR box from Comcast, TWC,....on top of the price of this one. Overall, ATI DCT+CableCARD are probably cheaper.
#3 This is totally different than the WD Media Player
#5 Because setting that up is iffy and only works with cable. This works with cable, DVD players, BlueRay and satellite. Also, you still need to rent a cable card from the cable co and satellite set top boxes are often "free".
Also, to address another concern, they have fixed the overheating problem. Mine barely even gets warm and it gets used for hours on end every day as a PVR. The only reason to worry about the overheating issue is if you buy an old one online someplace. Dell is not going to sell you an old unit.
#5 I've heard lots of horror stories about cable cards. The cable companys don't want them to work so they make it difficult to get it to work. Even if you get it to work I'm pretty sure anything you record is encrypted so it will only play in windows media center. This device avoids all DRM issues by recording the signal in analog. Once recorded you can watch it on the PC, record it to a DVD, put it on a flash drive, whatever you want.
I have the Hauppauge PCI HD card and it work as advertised.

this allows you to COPY 1080i material to a unprotected format. HDMI does not allow copying of HD broadcasts.

#7 is dead on. This is a one of a kind product that records what other devices can't.
