Dell Home has the Hauppauge HD PVR High Definition Personal Video Recorder 1212 USB 2.0 Interface for $230 - 25% with coupon code B0FP12N2JW5L2L [Exp 2/12] + $0 shipping = $173 shipped. Built-in hardware H.264 high definition encoder, for high performance, high quality TV recordings.
What ironic is that this thing ISN'T a "PVR" either. It has no hard drive - all it does is encode incoming video and spits it out on USB. Needs it's own hard drive to record to to be worth anything more than $50.
This device is really only used to RECORD HD from the analog component , thats it... its not a pvr.. it basically allows you to record in hd so you can move it to a dvd-r thats a playable avchd file on most blu ray / ps3 players. you can also keep the file , its a mts file .... There is no other way to record in HD in this manner.....
#16, I use mine with Beyond TV to set up recordings. It is an expensive program, but works well. GBPVR is free, but there is a nominal fee for its Guide service. I think the device comes with a free Hauppauge service based on Titan TV, but I have never used it.
Just curios can I record HD files from my laptop.
I LOVE this thing! I record modern marvels in HD and make blu ray discs for later viewing! This device is the best!
Modern Marvels rocks!
this looks almost identical to sony's new set top box http://bensbargains.netn.com/acm52y
the link above from terrenceistheman is invalid.
looks like he is making money by linking you to paid popups
It's Ben, #5. You can only link to sites he deals with. Otherwise you get BACON.
Only up to 1080i
It's only 1080i, but then component video is only 1080i. That's the only way to bypass the DRM built into HDMI. Great encoder.
I posted this over a week ago at SD's. Funny that it is just showing up here.
Can it record/playback encrypted Cable programming? HBO
#10, yes provided that you get that encrypted channel on your cable box. It only records what the box sees.
Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player - $99.00 at buy.com + free shipping.
Uses HDMI to the TV.
So what's your point #12 - that Western Digital is NOT a PVR. 2 totally different machines here.

#14, it is overpriced, but worth more than $50 It works very well, and does something no other USB to computer device does.
How does the box get its programming? Do you have to pay monthly like my Tivo?

I am not sure about this. Seems to be overpriced.
