If things look distorted, play with your laptop's resolution settings. If it has a TV-out option, you may have a perfect, pre-defined setting...

Note that this will NOT let you connect and HDCP-compliant HDMI device to a non-HDCP-compliant DVI screen. I discovered the hard way that my computer's LCD screen and my new DVD player aren't compatible in that respect.

Unless you're watching pirated content, the odds are that you won't be able to watch anything, since the Hollywood rodeo cowboy are trying to use HDMI to lock down HD content. For some reason I'm not surprised that they would adopt technology that does very little to stop actual piracy but screws legitimate customers. It seems to be a recurring theme in the media industry.

However, I'm pretty sure there are some gadgets available that can strip the protection from the signal. They're not legal in the US due to the DCMA law, but you can probably find places that sell them here on the down-low, or order them from overseas.
