I got two of these from ZipZoomFly recently for $140 before $30 eBillMe rebate. They seem pretty quiet so far. Gonna put them in my DNS-323 tonight, but gotta update the NAS firmware first.

I'd rather have a WD Green anyways #1, but this is still a good deal.

Yes, before it seemed previous generation drives never got below $100-$120 each year. Now they are $65-$85.

I prefer a Hitachi 1.5TB under $100. There is only one empty slot in my 2-drives plug-in station and I want more capacity as they are running out quickly.
Somehow, the drive manufacturers do seem rather slow in ramping up the 500GB/platter generation for some reason. Technology must be hitting a snag in mass productions and quality control of these perpendicular recording media.

Hmm, I want one, but only 16MB cache? Think I will have to find a great deal on a 32MB drive. Even though capacity is more important than performance, I still want something newer with current technology.

I was thinking of using this with my WDTV and BlacX docking station for storing movies. Do these run hot?

#12 16MB cache is "current technology", many models don't have it because currently they realize there isn't much need for bulk storage.

#12. Cache was important when drives were moving from 2MB up to 8MB cache. The move from 8MB to 16MB had a lot smaller impact on performance. And the difference in performance between 16MB and 32MB cache is lost in other factors. If you check TomsHardware HD performance charts you'll find a number of drives with 16MB cache near the top of the performance charts.

You would need an IDE to SATA adapter
