Oh' I don't know $60 for a new 500Gb is as low as it been lately. Sure it no performance drive and Hitachi (which aren't bad now) while weren't they acquired by Western Digital. If just needing a HDD for a Bundle I'd add to cart... Can you provide an alternate that's close to this that's not $75?

Agree with others. Think this drive was around $35 to $40 before the "shortage".

Makes you wonder, with WD's recent acquisition of Hitachi, if they are just clearing out old Hitachi stock (rebadged) ..... at inflated prices.

Might go for a WD Black 500g at $50 ~ $60 .... but this deal is a pass.

So if you need a drive today you can always climb into your "way-back machines" a grab a a nice 1Tb for $50!

    Reality sucks!

Yeah these may be old stock, 'egg was selling them in Dec. 2009 based on review dates. I wonder if warranties on old stock will start from manufacture date or purchase date.

Prices can only go up.... PC desktops are a dying breed. Tablets and gaming systems don't use desktop drives so
smaller productions runs mean higher prices. The only big users of these large drive are servers and set top DVR;s.
Did anyone notice that Windows 8 is a tablet OS,

PC desktops aren't a dying breed, it's simply that people already owned desktops and they were fast enough to do the majority if not all of what the average person uses a PC to do so sales of the *new* toys were higher.

Prices will come down a little more, then with another density increase the price per platter will be about the same but capacity per dollar will go up again. If that doesn't happen the inevitable result would be China producing drives costing half as much and refining them until they're at an acceptable quality level, though that will probably happen either way.
