RAID 1 here I come!
$65 +tax? damn! Great price for a TB of storage.
This is a good price. I may have to finally buy a NAS.
Three comments and nobody has used the word "deathstar"?
(Deathstar was a nickname given to some IBM DeskStar drives many years ago, when they exhibited premature failure at a higher-than-expected rate. Probably no connection between that technology and the technology used in these drives.)
Good deal! only if i didnt have so many HDs i would have gotten 1 myself.
Worst drives I've ever used were Hitachi, Samsung, and Toshiba. Utter shite. Stick w/ WD and Seagate if you value your data. I've lost tons of mine thanks to the deadly 3.
Deathstars had heat issues, If properly cooled they lasted (problem is, why worry about cooling, when other HD's dont need to). I have a TB Hitachi for about 2 years now, no problems. But prefer the 5 years you can get sometimes on WD drives (alot of the external drives have had 5 years).
The 'Egg is showing an 83% rating for 3 stars or better.
Although it's 7200 RPM, its also only a 16MB cache (not that I've ever notice a performance difference).
I had 2 Deathstars last over 6 years each. They mostly ran 24/7. Guess mine were the exception.
They came out with a patched firmware that would prevent good drives from dying, but if it had already started having issues, it wouldn't help. petep2112 may have had a set leave there with the patch already on it...
I've had a pair of these running in my DNS-323 for about 2 months now. No issues so far. These run quieter than the previous two drives I had (a 500gb Deskstar and a 500gb Samsung, don't remember model #'s).
Lately Hitachi drives havent been bad at all. I woul still prefer a WD, however at this price I might just buy one and see.
it has a 3 year warranty stop your whining jackasses.
Hitachi/Toshiba/Samsung HD consistently run 10-20% cheaper than their WD/Seagate correspondents. Given that so much of HD preference is based on personal and anecdotal experience, is there any objective test basis for comparison, or is the whole affair just a matter of paying your money and taking your chances?
I purchased one about a month ago for about the same price. I read on the forums that the failure rate was higher than normal for this drive. But there is a 30 day return policy on it through NewEgg - - and they're very reasonable about returns. So I've been stress testing it in hopes any failures will become evident before the warranty is up. So far so good!
nice price, wonder why the 7k1000.b has only 16mb cache
I've had a Hitachi drive running in my NAS for 2 years now and no problems. But it is a bit loud though. Also I hear that if you run it as a backup drive such as in a NAS, the cache does not matter all that much.
Ben has listed a Seagate 7200.12 LP for $75 with coupon. Fewer platters contribute to longer life as does lower RPM, it is the better long term storage drive.
