    Hitachi rebate is a scam.

All these were posted in March:

...I bought same drive in November and rebate is still
    ...processing

...the fulfillment house for this ZipZoomfly/Hitachi rebate is
...the same one that keeps delaying me on my valid rebate
    ...from October 2008.

...I never got the rebate from November. I emailed them and
...they told me I would receive it in 15 days. Its now been
    ...30 days since that.

...A few months ago, I paid about $70 AR. Still waiting for
    ...the rebate.

...I bought a hitachi 1T from TD last Dec and am still waiting
    ...for $30 rebate to come.

...I have two Hitachi rebates pending from November.

...did a similar hitachi deal in nov, still waiting for the rebate
    ...to come.

...I bought one from Buy and another from Newegg in Nov and
...Dec neither has arrived. Both are waiting for "final process".

I have to ask. I know Hitachi is making these now but, has the Deskstar model gotten any better from a reliability stand point? That name still frightens me!

I have one that has been running since around the beginning of this w/o any problem. Reasonably quiet and cool.

I paid around $65 all told after the various rebates from Hitachi, Microworst rebate, etc. The rebates did come, though not exactly speedily.

Since then prices have gone down. I believe $65-75 is still a good price for this, but the $80 here is no bargain. YANBFB

The only gripe I have on Hitachi hard drive is the software support which is almost non-existent. I can't find a formatting utility on their download area. Seagate has DiscWizard, Maxtor has MaxBlast and Western Digital has Data Life Guard Tool. All available for download for users who buy OEM drives.

The IBM "Deathstars" were problems 10+ years ago and since have a reputation for a very solid drive even with the transition to Hitachi. I have used them to build 100's of PC's and had no problems with them.

Hitachi does have a formatting utility (even creates a service code for warranty and repair if it finds a issue on one of their drives). Been around many years, it's called DFT (Drive Fitness Tool) and can be downloaded as floppy or iso for CD at
    http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#DFT
