i got the 1tb version of this the other day for 68 and so i guess this is kind of a deal but not really. it was the most retarded install i have ever done for any hardware. i only recently switched from xp to win7 but it was very annoying i thought either my computer or the drive was broken. maybe i am just a n00b but really i am not i have put together and hacked a bunch of crap so it was just weird. the drive is not formatted so you have to go thru all this system admin crap and drive console or some crap and initialize it. its not plug an play like the manual says. kind of annoying but hopefully i may steer u in the correct direction for this install ok goodbye.

#1, retail and OEM hard drives are almost always sold that way; I've never seen one come partitioned and formatted. It doesn't make much sense to either. There are more file systems than NTFS and more ways to use a drive than with a single partition, why should the manufacturer waste their time and cater to Joe Blow?

If it came partitioned and formatted someone would be bound to come along and declare they received a used drive.

Ordering, receiving, installing, all take multiple times as much work as popping open Disk Management and designating a partition, formatting, and the drive letter you want it to be.

If on the other hand it's a new OS installation (of windows), it'll do that for you pre-install.

#1 - How would they know if I wanted EXT2, EXT3, EXT4, NTFS, ZFS, or many others in it? The world doesn't revolve around Windows.

#6, they may run five platters, but at least they work. I just installed two of these drives and so far they have been flawless. I had a 2TB Western Digital Green that I had to RMA twice before getting a drive that didn't contain a ton of errors when doing a surface scan right out of the package. I then took a chance and ordered two more and one of them refused to spin up, and the other one spun up once before failing as well.

So while the tech might be older, I'll take drives that I feel more reliable in my server.

I agree with #7. Hitachi hard drives have served me well in the last two years. I switched from Seagate to Hitachi.

Excellent reliability and great drives. 5 platters isn't a bad thing.

Three Hitachi drives (1x1TB, 2x320GB) running 24/7 since last May in a WHS. Just put a 1TB Hitachi drive in a new HTPC build - great value IMHO.

$0.07/GB is not a bad price, especially for no rebate.

#1 Yea!.. I miss that shocker deal at 68, but I got one cheaper two days before that 68 deal at 65 one thing I like the 68 deals is a Retail package deal, mine is a OEM. Better handle and better quality shiped in Reatil package. I'am glad so many feels that Hitachi drive works because i own many..

Formatting the drive is pretty standard these days, just do a quick fomat. takes under a minutes..
