Cost Central has the HP GW405AT 2-Button USB Laser Mouse for $16 - $20 rebate [Exp 1/31/09] (limit 5) = -$4 with free shipping. It has a scroll wheel, so not all is lost by using such a basic device.

The goal of business is making $$ not losing $4 each mouse. It's kind of tricky and I will pass... The mouse don't worth $16 either...

#24: well, sure the mouse is not worth $16, but it certainly is worth more than -$3.74.

Actually it probably is worth $16. How often do you get a laser mouse for less delivered? Granted it's not ergonomic (really meaning only if you're right-handed and the desk is high enough to rotate your forearm) and has fewer buttons, but sometimes even pro gamers want a basic high precision non-cordless mouse like this instead of some huge heavy lump.

What would make it really nice is if you took some of that spray-on tread paint with the sand particles in it and covered the whole thing. Instant super-grip, better than the typical skinny rubber strips on many gaming mice. Be sure to spray that stuff outside on a warm day, it's more toxic than regular spray-paint.

#16: I just got a 1600dpi Rosewill laser mouse for $5 from newegg a few weeks ago. A while before that I bought a 2500dpi A4Tech laser gaming mouse for around $20. More recently, I bought another high DPI laser gaming mouse from buy.com for $18. I don't think I've ever paid more than $20-25 for a mouse ever, and I'd never pay around $20 unless it really has a nice feature set.

$20 for a basic 800dpi laser mouse is not worth it.

So that Rosewill was that price without a rebate? Pretty good deal if it was, but otherwise the DPI figures don't mean much, it's which optical engine it uses that really matters because higher DPI engines can't actually perceive all those pixels without a very good mousing surface (typically more expensive than a $20 mouse).

I think you are missing the point calling it a "Basic" mouse, as if that means it is worth less. The shape and low weight make it worth more for many uses, including serious gaming. Serious gamers don't tend to want a heavy thing with a half dozen buttons, that's what a keyboard is for.

Anywhay, where'd you get $20 figure for this? $16 or -$4, is worthwhile if this is the style mouse one seeks. It's always about the style, being an input device the shape one wants is the most important factor not the line-item specs providing it has a laser optical engine.
