Can anyone recommend a comparable or better notebook for cheaper?

Taxes jacks the price up to nearly $1000 for me...

This is pricey but you're not gonna find similar for much cheaper. 18", High resolution screen, 7200 RPM hard drive, Blu-Ray ROM, and a dedicated video card make it a really nice desktop replacement but also make it rather expensive.

      Too good = too expensive

Defeats the purpose of a laptop at this size. However, as a portable desktop replacement, this is a very nice deal. I have no experience with HP equipment since back in 1993 but it looked and sounded nice at Best Buys last year when they had a demo. That particular laptop had special speakers built in to the corners.

If you just looked at specs at this price, this thing is hard to beat. It seems perfect for certain folks who don't care as long as they can carry their desktop around.

This is indeed a very good desktop replacement and no others can compete. You can even config it with quad core CPU and the latest DDR3 memory. You paid what you ask for. Sony AW series is another good one but way too expensive.

For this size, it's not a true laptop nor desktop. HP also has HP Touchsmart PC which have smaller footprint, bigger screen and it is touch screen for around $1200.00.

HP's new laptops have impressed me. Stylish and well equipped for the price. The only concern is quality. I haven't had a problem with my HP laptops, but many have.
