I see we are having a serious discussion here, but what kind of price range should i be looking at for a decent road bike? $500? $1000? $1500? I have an REI locally, are their prices decent? I don't think I am going to find a bargain on a bike, but maybe I am wrong.
this bike would make the Amish want to drive a car
I also hate illegal mexican immigrants. As a hard working taxpayer who paid over $ 17,000 in taxes last year, the last thing I need is more people on the road on this bike.
If you want a real bike, get a Harley.

Everybody's idea of decent may differ. It often helps to consider how often you'll ride it and whether it is important how fast you go or how much you want to impress others if you were thinking of joining a cycling club. With bike snobs, no matter what you want to get there is always someone that would tell you it's important to spend $100 more, then $100 more, and so on, while only you know if light weight is more important than durability or if you want both at a price premium.
I never found REI's prices very good compared to online, though if you buy from the local bike shop then you get the initial adjustment and maybe more free adjustments for a year or more.
For a beginner bike you don't really need to spend over $500, and if on a budget that might be a bit much still. Go to a bicyclist forum and they can tell you what is good at any moment in time and assist some with geometry. A bike that fits is more than only considering the tube height and if willing to pay $500 or more you should be able to find something that fits well. To this end you might consdier visiting the local bike shop just to see what they have and hop on a few.

The above brought to you by our little poster boy for the Republican party.
I think you'd be wise to look on Google for info on how to shop for a bike and what types are available. Then go check out as many as you can. Keep notes on how they feel and ride, and when you've narrowed the field somewhat, go back and do a more serious comparison of those you like best. Lots of quite decent bikes are available for under $500, so you should have plenty to choose from. Also, don't forget to keep an eye on Craigslist, as you can often find good deals there.
