Seriously, if you really want to raise chickens, it is much easier buying chicks from a respected breeder instead.

You'd have to go there to get fertilized eggs, anyways.

Maybe you want to raise something besides chickens. This time of year there will be birds gathering up grasses and such to build nests, then it's just a matter of waiting a week or so for good odds there's eggs in the nest. If you want to speed up the process throw a patch of straw on the ground to attract the birds.

you can spot birds carrying a worm around instead of eating it and follow them to a nest full of chicks. Note that some birds have a natural instinct to not just fly straight back to their nest, they'll fly or hop to a few random locations before arriving at the nest in an attempt to confuse predators. It's probably a good idea to wear a long sleeve shirt, helmit, and eye goggles in case of attack by the mother.
