I think the flashlights that work by closing your grip are much better because you can use them one-handed. Since some people seem to be using these as emergency lights in a car, being able to use a flashlight one-handed is especially useful (like when you're working under the hood).
Still, I just got my wife a small LED-powered flashlight and put a lithium AA in it. It's brighter than any of these hand crank units and the battery is good for 10 years, longer than she'll have the car. If I'm gonna rely on this for safety, I think it's better to just get a more reliable solution.
