i would be interested if the ssd could be upgraded to a hdd.

the ssd is in a mini pci-express slot and the available space doesn't appear big enough to house a 2.5" hdd even if there exists a hdd (pata or sata) header somewhere else on the system board or a miniature hdd controller (for mini pcie). yeah, you can upgrade the ssd (pay dell more or buy it yourself as it's an easy user upgrade), but current affordable ssd tech is no faster than hdd, the diminutive storage space is limiting, and i'm gentle enough on my portable computers to not break moving/rotating parts.

i searched for a minute or two for ssd->hdd mini 9 mods, but couldn't find anything, so i guess most people have come to the same conclusion i have: the upgrade is not worthwhile (if even possible).

though, again, the price even with the ssd is tempting.

Used a 17% off coupon from a buddy who works at Dell and that turned it into a deal Smile

#4-- Hmm.. I use Ubuntu on both my mini and main workstation and have zero problems. Must be user error.

Blaming an OS for website problems?

Dell had originally said they were phasing out the Mini 9 but keep bringing it back for these $199 sales. I got one the last time they ran it at this price. The best thing about the Mini 9 is that it is the best netbook to use to create a Hacintoch by installing the Apple operating system on it, with everything working. But you need a minimum of 8 GB for the SSD and preferably 16, so spring for the extra $75. So for about $400 after buying a copy of Leopard and this Mini 9 with the bigger SSD, you can create your own Apple netbook. While I liked the Ubuntu that came on the Mini 9, I really love my Mini 9 running Apple OSX.

Hmm...what's the footprint of Windows XP Home? Would that be able to fit on the 4GB SSD in addition to let's say a recipe program? Wife is looking for a cheap, lightweight netbook for looking up recipes in the kitchen. This might fit the bill if I can get XP and the recipe program on there.

Worst case scenario is that I use a USB flash drive for the recipe app.

Working great with OS-X and a 32GB SSD. Buy a 2GB RAM upgrade at Crucial.

#9, you can install XP Lite, which should give you a decent amount of driv space left over. Also, you should be able to install apps onto an SD card. The Eee PCs allows you to.
