Why do you need a large hard drive for what is essentially a machine made for surfing and email? Four GB is enough for the OS and essential apps. Store your larger/extra files on a flash drive or network storage if needed.

I would say its one of the nicer looking ones but I would take an Asus 90x, MSI wind Q1, or an Acer Aspire one.

The biggest problem with this netbook, at least to my mind, is that it's the most underwhelming pos yet. You'd think that Dell would just want to blow the competition out of the water, but no, Lenovo was much closer to doing that then Dell. I had waited for some time just to see what Dell dropped, talk about every x-mas morning at my house ever, in regards to what Dell decided to make here.

I've had (for about a week) my ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) [upgraded to 2GB] that I paid a total of $459 delivered. If it sucked, I would surely tell you. But it's nice. I mean REALLY nice.

Some will say, "That's more than 50% more $ than this "deal". True, but it has:

4 times the RAM (and the Dell can only go to 1GB as far as I can tell),
      a larger screen,
      a larger keyboard,
      40 times the storage (160GB vs. 4GB),
      a webcam *included*,
a SIX cell battery (vs. 4 cell battery)
      and ...
      Windows XP.
So for an extra 50% in cost you get a LOT more than 50% increase in value.

Oh, and if you try to make it more even by upgrading the memory on the Dell to 1GB (the max), upgrade storage from 4GB to 16GB, and include the webcam then you're at the same price as my ASUS Eee PC 1000HA (not counting the RAM upgrade I bought) and mine STILL has
      a larger screen,
      a larger keyboard,
      10 times the storage (160GB vs. 16GB),
a SIX cell battery (vs. 4 cell battery)
      and ...
      Windows XP.
I got nothing against Dell - 5 of my last 7 computers were Dell and my last 5 PDAs were all Dell. This machine just falls short of the benchmark, IMHO.

And, BTW, I got nothing against Linux either. But most of us probably use Windows apps. Installing my 2nd of 3 Office 2007 licenses has worked out really well.

    the look is not bad
but it doesn't look any good after tax compare to the Acer, which is less than $20 more expensive and has A LOT BETTER spec.

Also, the Mini 12 looks even better. but Dell should sell at least $100 cheaper than their current prices. (and what's up with the 4200rpm HDD?)

Even 32GB is small unless you are just surfing the web. Of course you can always add an external USB drive for more storage.

#29, beware of the new HP mini's 1.8" HDD
you will hang yourself of the slow speed and the troublesome HDD upgrade

I love the keyboard though, btw....

Very odd offering. I see the same thing but with 8GB SSD in Dell's outlet for $309. Of course, that doesn't include shipping or tax. Regardless, Dell has a ton of these in the Outlet online and I'm sure they'll offer discounts on them again sooner or later, which is how I bought mine.

memory & storage are too small for this price point compared to other netbooks (not necessarily asus eeepc, but msi wind & acer aspire one).

for ~$300 netbook "deal" you should be getting 1 GB RAM and 8 GB SSD or 120 GB HD.

I would rather spend $100 more (on Amazon) and get the Acer One with 160GB hard drive, 1GB Ram and 6 hour battery. If Dell has a mini that can compete at that pricepoint, I will become a believer.

I have this exact configuration with Ubuntu. SLOW. I even upgraded it with 2GB of memory. Still SLOW. Keyboard is tiny. Impossible to touch type. Trackpad mouse is small but I still manage to bump it all the time.

If I can find a deal on a 16GB or 32GB SSD drive I may upgrade and try Windows on it. Need to also get a portable mouse.

Saw HP's mini at Costco last weekend. Not much more than this. Keyboard is nearly full-size. If I were spending my own money I'd get it over the Dell any day.
