Looks nice but the ship date for Ubuntu is to long, Preliminary Ship Date: 10/9/2008 , XP Preliminary Ship Date: 9/18/2008
So you will have to wait a month if you don't want XP.
The XP is a good deal

If you go to the dell frontpage and click on the mini 9 flash link. they have an option for a 8gb and windows XP for 399$. Would windows XP run smoothly on this?

Yeah, but for less than 500 you can have 1gb ram, 16gb hdd, and 1.3mp porn cam.

Who would spend 399 and bypass those easy upgrades?

the question should be who would buy this now when Dell has so many coupons all the time. This will be much cheaper at some point in the coming months.

The Acer aspire One blows this away, with more RAM, real HD, XP. $350 at microcenter.

So for the MSI wind and Acer offerings look better. Once again, the pre-release price rumors were exaggerated.

I don't understand why they make glossy screens which the Dell Mini has. Do they appear sharper?

Non-reflectiveness was a big factor in choosing my HDTV. You can compare sharpness, color,... but if you have a reflection of a lamp or window, it's a larger distraction.

Apparently, the keyboard for this model is poorly designed.

    Dell Mini 9 (Inspiron 910):
    Has 3G/WiMax slot
    Ubuntu is fully supported
    4-cell battery
    RAM slot - user-upgradable
    Intel 950 chipset

    Acer Aspire One:
Not sure if it has 3G/WiMax slot (I've heard yes and no)
    Ubuntu not 100% (yet)
    3-cell battery
Not sure if RAM is soldered on mobo (I've heard yes and no)
    Intel 945 chipset

    Thoughts?
If these had a touchscreen and better battery life and full Ubuntu support - I'd buy in cash!

My friend is going to get this for work and office productivity. It looks nice, but I do agree that it does seem underpowered. Given its use, it should be fine.

Pass on this first generation crap unless you can get an absolute steal on it.

#12 Dell got itself killed this time, the AspireOne beats it hands down. When you compare them at the same $350 model, the Acer has 1Gb RAM, 120Gb HDD, XP, and webcam. While the Dell has 512M RAM, 4G SSD, Linux, and no webcam. Besides, the Acer's keyboard is one of the best I've ever tried, just a hair shy of the Wind's. If you are willing to spend $399 then you can get the Acer with 160G HDD and 6-cell battery.
