Newegg has the Intel Core 2 Duo Wolfdale E8400 3.0GHz 6MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor for $168 - $8 off with coupon code CPU158 [Exp 10/11] = $160 with free shipping. This is a retail boxed CPU with Heatsink and Fan included. People are overclocking this thing to 3.6GHz with just air cooling & a good aftermarket heat sink.

I bought this for 180$ in July '08.... the price on CPUs must fall at a glacial pace.

I will deposit 65 bucks into the bank and I'll be able to buy this thing by next year.

This would have been a deal a year ago. And only a minor one, at that. You'd probably decide against it if NewEgg charged tax in your state.

    Meh.

don't see why intel is refusing to drop the prices on their LGA775 chips when both the i5 as well as i7 are out

#5 - Since AMD, despite being a great value at the low and middle end, isn't competitive on the high end - Intel doesn't see the need to price their chips competitively. They know the high price of I5/7 motherboards will keep the mid-level purchasers in 775-land, why should they give them a good deal on the chips. This is a good chip (I am running one right now)

This is indeed a good chip. I'm running the E8500 (just a slight speed bump) and I've never had any problems with it.

As for the deal, it isn't one. I agree with #6, Intel won't drop prices without competition and AMD doesn't have chips that really compete at this level.

A few months ago Fry's had the E8500 plus a motherboard for $135. These chips should be about $50 now. I'll skip the LGA775 platform and go with i5 unless there's a drastic price cut in these things.
