Hotness UNHOT
NewEgg.com has the Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz 6MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor for $190 with free shipping. This is an OEM processor so no cooling solution is included. People are overclocking this thing to 3.6GHz with just air cooling & a good aftermarket heat sink.

It's almost out of stock when you post it, Ben.

Watch for the Xeon version of this (E3110 I think), but it's OOS almost as much.

I had been waiting for an E8400 to be in stock (and for a reasonable price) since they came out. I was finally able to jump on the $189 E3110 deal when it first came out, before everybody knew it was the same processor.

I gotta say that this (E8400/E3110) is a great processor. I'm running it at 3.2GHz using just the short profile stock heatsink and I'm having no problems with it. I could take it higher but I don't want to push it with just the stock heatsink.

That being said I wouldn't buy an OEM processor. If you're planning on buying a 3rd party cooler then OEMs not coming with a heatsink isn't an issue but the almost nonexistent warranty would be a concern. OEMs come with anything from 15 to 90 day warranties and they are not processed by Intel but by the store you bought it from. For the most part if something bad is going to happen to the CPU it will usually happen right away but I still prefer boxed processors just to have the 3-year warranty to fall back on.

who the hack cares about warranty on a cpu. If the cpu comes to life on day one, it run and go obsolete before it will ever see day end.

In all my years of computer building ( 18 ), I've never seen a CPU go bad, with the exception of people doing stupid things like not installing a HS correctly.

#5, you obviously haven't installed many Prescott P4s. These suckers get into a thermal runaway cycle that even a cryogenic cooler couldn't stop. Intel has given me no trouble replacing them-and that's why I only buy them retail boxed.

Intel starts to ship lots of penryns this quater, I think Newegg gets it first, and this would be a normal price from now on.

#4, I used to say that. I've been building machines for 15+ years and I've seen exactly one CPU die, about a year ago -- an Athlon X2, which AMD replaced because it was boxed and I was using the stock HSF. So a dead CPU is rare but not unheard of... made me glad I'd stayed stock on that one.

#6 - Had a 630 for two years. It wasn't very overclockable, even on water. I've never heard of a failure with a properly mounted heatsink - though on average they did run hot and go into thermal throttle under load (I guess you could consider that a form of "failure").

#5 must never have worked with the old IBM Cyrix processors either. Man, those things were constantly failing.

I'll agree though, that I've never had an Intel processor fail. I had 1 AMD fail because of overheating issues.

Keep in mind that you might have a temp issue with this processor. Simply Google "e8400 temp" will give a bunch of various posts about the high idle temp.

I personally had a weird problem where my idle temp was 90 C and load could shoot up to 100+ C before it shut down by itself.
I exchanged the processor + motherboard and the temp now is 45 C/60 C, which I've read many time is pretty normal using the stock CPU cooler.

Awesome processor. I got one of the last retail ones back in March and it takes everything I can throw at it. I would skip the OEM model just so you can get the 3 year warranty.
