The Core 2 Quads are nice chips, but if you are building new you might want to look at spending a few extra bucks on an i7. If you have the mobo though this is a good price.

I just got my i7 for $199 at Microcenter if you're fortunate enough to live near one.

Ya the 920 has been as low as $200 ($250ish seems more realistic though - considering the $200 is a microcenter price) and it will be leaps and bounds ahead of that old generation Quad. The only issue is finding deals on a motherboard and then DDR3 memory too. That Ebillme promo ends tomorrow but you can pick up a Gigabyte X58 (i7) board for around $140 with it (awesome deal on current current tech).

I myself am buying an AMD Phenom x2 550 be and hoping for a successful quad unlock (highly likely with the right motherboard). Only a $110 up front for the processor ($80 with ebillme) make it really worth it to me. If it doesn't work you get a fast dual core (similar to E8400) for much less.

If you are an enthusiast running virtualization, staying with the same chip architecture is recommended. So, if you already have a C2D system and would be adding another, I wouldn't go to a i7.

OTOH, if you are planning to upgrade your other physical machines used for virtualization, then I have to agree with #1. Make the switch to an i7 + motherboard now, if you can't wait 2 more years for them to become cheap.

Yeah. i7 is too new. There might be some issues for new products like new model cars.
