Core i7 920 at $200 at microcenter seems like a better buy (says OOS, good thing I got it a couple of weeks back), though motherboards for x58 is more expensive.

at least get a better i5 so you can have hyperthreading (not sure why you wouldn't want it)

Those of us who live near a Micro Center can get this processor for $160, or the new i7 860 (which does have Hyperthreading) for $230.

And for those of you who don't read the reviews: These new Socket 1156 processors have much lower power usage than the old i7's (and many other processors, especially at idle), and have faster single/dual-core "turbo" speeds than the old i7's. Also, they can take advantage of faster default memory speeds. And you can get much cheaper motherboards. Just to name a few of the differences.

Micro Center has some great prices right now. $159 for this CPU & $149 for an Asus motherboard, with free instore pickup. Only $337 out the door.

That's a good deal even with the high sales tax out here Sad

Problem is I'd also need a new video card and new memory.... more than I'd want to spend right now.

Looks like a great mainstream processor, the only real drawback is that the built in PCI-E interface on the chip limits its ability to overclock. At least according to anandtech.com and I've always found them reliable.

    http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3634&p=18

You got to ramp up the voltage to overclock these even a little because of that PCI-E imposed limitations. The article seems to say that Intel will uncouple the PCI-E bus from BCLK in future steppings or products and fix this limitation. I might just wait until then.
