You may be thinking this will stick too far out of your laptop? They do have the micro units, but I can tell you from experience that the reception can be poor with either unit if you plug it directly into the laptop or PC.
It's best to use these with a short USB cord; I know that sucks, but you'll get much better reception. You can try it without the cord, but I'd have one handy if you're not satisfied with the connection.
