    I have a free tester. It's called sticking the battery into something and see if it turns on.

    The one from Harbor Freight has one of those wacky LCD battery meters powered by a coin cell battery so the LCD display doesn't draw current from the battery you are testing.

    Got a bunch of these for less from shnoop! a long time ago. They are actually very good. I gave most of them as gifts and everyone uses them.

    Are you kidding? this one does not test under load. It only shows you the voltage.

    Running the meter in the gadget is a load. Poor batteries will fade quickly.

    A multimeter will be more useful, as the NiMH rechargeables are commonly used nowadays.
