Apple Store has the refurbished iPod classic 80GB Digital Music/Video Player for $209 + $0 shipping = $209 shipped. This is the latest generation iPod with Cover Flow & other dubious improvements. It has an all-metal design, with 30hour(s) battery life in audio mode. Storage for up to 20,000 songs or up to 100 hours of video. [BizRate]

Fsck the classic. The 5.5 gen is twice as thick but also twice as powerful. You can install rockbox, Ipod Linux and original firmware all using a boot menu. The original firmware is still best for video but rockbox is much better for music. You can also play doom on your ipod and it's reasonably playable.

Yeah, getting much better battery life and twice the storage for the money with the classic sucks. I'm ashamed to admit that I bought one. What a dumbass.

Well, I got news for ya, dumbass. I owned a classic, sold it on Ebay and got a USED 5 It's physically bigger but also with a bigger battery life. When they say it's got more battery life they are comparing it to the 30GB 5th gen. The 80GB 5.5 gen is a different animal.

Well, I tip my hat to you sir. Your experience runs counter to mine and my friends with the same gear, but congratulations on your good fortune.

I understand why you'd want to install Rockbox on a Creative player, but you need to be pretty deranged to install it on an iPod -- which just works.
The Classic is better at everything (battery life, capacity, responsiveness, features) except one: because of modifications Apple made to the connector, lots of video accessories are not compatible with the Classic which led manufacturers to dump them while they still can. So one very good reason for getting a 5.5gen iPod is access to the awesome MyVu video glasses for $60 (buy.com), the Memorex 8" foldable player for $30, etc...

"Just works" is fine if all you want to do is listen to music. I like to create play lists on the fly, rename mp3 files and delete crap files that I got from Napster 5 years ago. RIAA and others were booby trapping .mp3 files back then and some slipped through my superficial screening process.

BTW, If you want to load up on a sh*tload of mp3 files (128bit) google for "Pandora's Jar"

I still maintain that my 80GB Classic had less battery life than my thicker 5.5 gen 80GB Ipod. Maybe my Classic was a lemon.
