I would like to try one of these but everyone I know that owns one says they do not last very long (maybe a year at best)

"one of these" #1... this exact model? The older generation roombas weren't designed as well as the newer ones. As you would expect, the newer models like this one have anti-tangle feature, much easier to clean, better roving patterns, wall detection, stair drop-off detection etc...

Actually #6, no, they don't suck, they "sweep" using a roller brush. But regardless, it was a valiant attempt at a pun.

My wife is pushing for one of these. Anybody have a dog w/ one of these units? I can'r believe it works that well to justify the price.

works well for dog hair on tile and hardwood floors, not so well on carpet.

I have same model & think it was worth it even after spending $100 more than it's listed on woot. Only thing I've had to replace is the anti tangle cord & bought a 3 pack on ebay for CHEAP. I have tile & carpet & thought it works great on carpet. Only difference is I empty the filter more on carpet than I do on tile.

they work... but you need to do a little prep - like moving things out of the way for them to work better

Another useful tip is to run your cylinder vacuum cleaner around the room first.

I have one, it does a decent job but it doesn't entirely replace the vacuum as it can't get corners or under certain things like tv stand/couch since its quite fat. I bought it from buy.com for about $160, i think its worth it.
