This may be a dumb question but what makes this device special? Can't any male to male usb cable on ebay do this?
^ No, a male to male USB cable not only won't allow peer-peer connections (unless the host device is specifically designed to do this since it isn't part of the USB spec), it also has the potential to fry USB ports due to the differences in 5V level possible.
To do what this device does, requires that it integrate a circuit in the cable that acts like a networking connection, so it is like a proprietary USB network adapter is built in.
You might be able to find an equivalent product elsewhere for less, it's hard to equate it when the performance is unknown, as well as the issue of whether it needs drivers installed on every peer it is used on.
