They figure people who buy iToys have no common sense so the more it costs the better it'll sell.
Disclaimer - I feel Apple has a lot of great tech innovations, which should make them slightly more profitable than competitors, but not profitable enough that they slack off and decide they can deprive customers of features because they know better.
