^ Nothing that recharges over USB actually requires more than 500mA stable power, though many dirt cheap lighter socket or wall wart style adapters are overrated.
I have one of the $1 USB chargers... it has an annoying high-pitched whine when my Droid X is plugged into it. It's garbage.
That's loose inductor windings, pop it open and coat the inductor with something... like superglue, paint, epoxy, etc, anything not prone to burn or melt if it gets hot inside the casing.
Dang! Just spend $15 at Tiger Direct for this. Works great though. I highly recommend it.
I think if you don't mind Kensington brand- you can buy them separately for about $1 or $2 each..
This is only 1 AMP, it won't work with the iPad which requires 2 AMPs.
