Is this the 2nd Gen? I have the first and I rooted and installed CM9 and it runs great with it, plus the battery life is a lot better as well.
No I don't believe it's "with ads" that is only the readers. This is the first gen Amazon tablet. I have one and it's not bad. Install Jelly Bean on it, or run go launcher to make it sort of dual OS, Amazon and Android.

The first generation Kindle Fire doesn't have ads. In fact, you can't upgrade the OS to a version with ads. If you could, it would support Free Time (which also comes with the newer OS.)
Best use for this is to root it and turn it into a full-fledged Android device.
