free download scam? I'm too scared to send any SMS messages to a 5-digit "shortcode", unless it's GOOGL.

Apparently, once you pay $500/mo to own once of the shortcodes, operators will let you charge any amount you want to any customer who messages you on them. My guess is that the promotional deal here is one of those situations. You'll be signed up for a monthly fee, and it will all be charged to your wireless plan.
