I have never heard this store.
I have never heard the brand of the item.
It's 3.5", not 2.5".
It's only 250GB.
Is this a deal?
It is a Network Attachment Storage Device. That make it a good deal.... if it works.
I agree with bostonman. These NAS devices run a good bit more than regular USB or even Firewire external disks. Some have extra features like a printer port and USB ports for additional drives. I have a SimpleTech and that particular feature doesn't work all that well.
I have two of them at home, both with 750 GB IDE drives; They're faster than traditional NAS drives and this model does not have fan so it's silent; another thing I like about it is that the HDD is formatted with NTFS and can be taken out and used as is if needed; this enclosure also has USB 2.0 port and can be used as a regular USB externakl drive
You have to install a driver to access these as network drives; this does not bother me and the thing seems to be pretty stable with the exception for an occasional network hiccups
BEWARE the hard drive that bears a one year warranty.... BEWAAARRREE!
I heard Klegg NDAS are slower than Regular NAS. I missed out the opportunity to get the enclosure only for $10 dollars. Fry's used to have the Enclosure Only for $17 dollars AR.
So at $57 is not that cheap. Still need check on more Reviews.
klegg bought ximeta. They are ximeta enclosures. I've had 2 for years and they have always worked great. They are ndas though, not nas, so know what you're buying.
Have to install a driver? What a joke. Would've been a decent deal if it worked like a normal NAS.
Have one, it's terribly slow over the network and you have to use their stupid software (it's not "just" a driver). Runs about normal speed over USB 2.0 compared to my other enclosures.
Can somebody clarify about the "driver-software"?
The software has pluses and minuses... plus is better security and write protection, minus is you have to install a driver on your OS to see the drive on the network (again, more secure that way though).
Tell us more. Is that secure or an illusion under which anyone else can install that driver (which is freely available?) and gain access?
I have to think the most secure is a full 'nix install where you have control of every parameter right down to encryption, validation, MAC address limitation, IP filtering, strong passwords, etc. Granted, that's not a standalone cheap NAS box it's a (typically) small PC, but some NAS do run 'nix and source code is available so I suppose it's all a matter of how much work one wants to put into it.
Found quite a few good reviews on this NAS... So I pull the trigger to brought one. Shipping is $10.3 to Boston. So it end up to be around $60.
This is not a bad price even if it is use as a USB 250G device.
No rebate hassle!
