BestBuy.com has the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 Speakers for $100 + shipping. Pick up in-store to save on shipping. These probably qualify as oldies but goodies now. [Review : BizRate]
Retailed at $150 no more than 3 yrs ago. These are a solid set of speakers that put out some quality sound. I have no clue why they're selling these for so low though.
I have these Klipsch speakers with a hercules card at home, and they are absolutely amazing. The sound is incredible and the subwoofer makes my house shake. Klipsch is a great brand and trustworthy.
I echo everyone else's comments ... these have been at this price for years and probably won't get much cheaper. They sound great and are a STEAL at $100. The highs sound great and the massive sub really thumps, definitely enough to piss off the neighbors and probably sound better than most people's audio setup.
I have the 5.1 version. Concur with everyone else. Definitely a recommended buy. Only complaint is that the subwoofer seems to have the low pass set at about 100hz. It has an extra mono RCA in the back for adding an -additional- sub, which I plugged my 8" Yamaha powered sub into for a great complement for the higher bass tones.
Means the subwoofer is producing both mid-bass and bass, rather than just bass as a true subwoofer should be doing. Leads to it sounding less than optimal. To be fair, even though the drivers in the satellites are pretty good sized for PC speakers, they're still kind of small to do proper mid-bass (at 6.5" the sub driver itself isn't more than a mid-bass driver, it's too small to do real bass anyway...)
But if you can only have a computer speaker 2.1 setup and don't have money for a better powered setup (Swan M200MKII's are a 2.0, but they're much better)... these are pretty good. At $100, definitely worth the money. I couldn't get the Swan M200 Mark II's or other powered monitors through my purchasing department, but I was able to get these. They're good enough...
The best pc speakers you can get, that woofer drove my wife crazy downstair, it shook the wall too. I got this set for the PC & a 200W Klipsch subwoofer for the plasma TV downstair.
This is a good deal. I think the lowest I've ever seen this 2.1 set is $80 at bestbuy because they were on clearance or it was combined with some 20% off coupon. They're a bit heavy on the bass, but still good from what I heard on my friend's computer. So it you like the punch of bass with decent mids and good highs, you'll enjoy this set.
Paid $107 from Dell Home about 2 years ago. I've got them hooked up to a drum set and they went from sounding great to nasty vibrational sounds (both satellites) which seem to emanate from the midrage (fullrange), paper driver. Thought the tweeter was a horn, but I think it's a paper speaker as well.
True they sounded good, and maybe it was the type of sound my drums were driving through the speakers that wrecked em, but I don't know why the sound source would do that?

Great speakers. But, it's an old model. Prices go down.

Really good sound. If you don't need 5.1, you'll love these.

Would like to see a deal on the 5.1 setup.

just curious, why is the lpf being set at 100hz bad?

yeah, these speakers pack a huge punch! You can feel cold air coming out the ported hole when the bass kicks!
