These do use microchipped cartridges so the DIY refill cost is higher than some, but you can get a CMYK full set of DIY refill toner and 'chips for $140 delivered on eBay, individual colors w/chip for $35, or complete carts 4 pack for $240.
Each color drum is separate from the toner, kinda pricey at over $150 per drum rated for 30K pages, meaning it is probably still cheapest in the long run to buy two printers and then start buying toner refill kits when those run out of toner.
So yeah there's an inherent expense in running a color laser compared to a B&W but if you need color I'd still go laser over inkjet unless you primarily want to print high quality photos you've taken, as in that area inkjets still have a bit better photo-realistic output.
