#2, fair enough. I didn't actually click the link. I just figured 'common sense' would suggest that Lego sets costing $200+ are never a bargain. Ever.
I really can't justify buying LEGO sets over $30. Although I admit the Death Star at $200 and takes about 20 hours to build is pretty cool. If you look at it as $10 per hour of entertainment I guess that isn't too bad. Still, it's not like you can really play with the thing that much. What can you really do with this thing?
you could build a LEGO Godzilla next to the LEGO Taj Mahal and film a fiery destruction scene.
I don't like all these new highly specialized LEGO sets/blocks. Where's the room for creativity?
I still have my legos from a loooong time ago and this looks really cool. Still the best kids toy in my opinion.

Just go to any local Wal-mart and grab some plastic bags for your kids. A lotta fun.
I own several Lego sets and some collectible models. My first Lego model was a V8 crane truck. The crane was operated using air compressor with 8 or 10 tiny pumps. The second model was the X-Wing Collectible Series. You don't "play" with them. You build them as replicas of things around you. You have some pieces of history and art in your ownership. That's Lego. Of course, Lego is also an educational tools (not only toy), for both kids and adults.
This Taj Mahal model is a real beauty. I will buy one.

Lego can still be all about creativity-- but that's not what this set's for. The idea here is that they can have a fancy computer use design the model for them with existing inventory to move it at premium 'collector' prices. In the end though, these things kinda sit either precariously ll around your house or they take up the room where you and yours could have raised loving offspring...and they collect dust.
They're also made out of fairly terrible plastic (PVC).
I'd still buy it though. I love these things.
Objectively speaking-- a poor buy.
I still have the X-Wing, but it was disassembled when we moved, and it still needs to wait until I have some spare times. It can be displayed in my living room, bedroom, or on the wall. If you do not have room to display them, do not buy them.
I agree, it's all about designing. They (Lego) make the designs and you buy them, or, you can design something by yourself (they give you a design program for free).
Talking about our offspring: Lego is for them, too. Santa Claus gave my son the Mindstorm (which has been used as educational tools by many colleges across the country) last Christmas and he's quite happy with it. MY Lego stuffs are also HIS Lego stuffs.
Finally, it's all up to you to value your Lego sets. My X-Wing is a perfect connection: Lego - Star Wars - Space - Past - Future - and Dreaming. It will last, for some long time.
This Taj Mahal model is no exception. It's not a no-name toy brick building (and btw there has none been built so far). It's a Lego.
